E 18 WHY AND HOW TO WASH YOUR FRESH FRUIT

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), says that 48 million Americans, one in every six people, get food poisoning each year. The surface of the fruit is porous, meaning it can absorb products like soap, detergent, and bleach, which are not food grade, so using either item to wash fruit is a form of chemical contamination.

Stick with the CDC’s choice of plain water to keep yourself safe. Produce with thick skin, like squash and melons, should be scrubbed with a stiff brush under running water to ensure clean, even if you plan to peel it.
